How many of you have had this problem where you switch your computer on, and it won't boot up, and always returns to the boot screen where none of the options presented work. Even booting into safe mode won't work! I've been copping this problem a lot lately and have just found an easier fix than what I have been doing.
This link takes you to an excellent site that shows you the steps to use to fix this problem.

And if it's a corrupt master boot record that you have to fix, this link is for you.

In the past, I have been installing just a basic image of XP on another hard drive, making the original hard drive a slave to it, and then running the chkdsk utility on it, when that's finished i've been putting it back as master, and booting into windows successfully, which works 99% of the time.
This "FIX" uses the recovery console in XP setup and gives you the full run down on what commands to type in. Much easier than my old method. I've yet to try it out, but after a rush of these problems lately, there had to be a better way of doing it, and now I find there is.

When I had that trouble, I used my Paragon 9.9 disk to rewrite my boot sector and fixed it. The beauty of using Paragon, you dont have to know the recovery console commands. I have Paragon 10 on the computer, but the disk is still a slightly upgraded Paragon 9. Paragon 10 is the only version that works properly with Win7, but any version of 9 will work from the disk as its outside of the OS.

I had occasion today to try this "fix", and found another problem as I went along. In order for this command to work, I had to run chkdsk first. It's taking quite some time, but i'm confident that eventually, this method will work.
Here's what came up on my screen.

Thanks Kev, thats good to know. Thats where I've gone wrong when trying to fix the MBR, I haven't run CHKDSK first. I dont normally need to use the Repair Consul, but theres always the one time that you could do with it. A mate got a boot sector virus about 2 weeks ago, I wish there was an easy way to fix that.

It turned out that the hard drive in question was so corrupted, it still didn't work after running chkdsk Ken. I pulled the drive and put it in an external case, and as there was no docs on it, I ended up just reformatting it.

I took a bit of a chance the other week, when my mate got that boot virus. I used Paragon to get it to boot into Wiindows and moved the pictures to the C: Then I full formatted the D: and moved the files and pictures back onto it. I took a chance that I didn't get the D: infected, but I was trying to save the picture files mainly. Then I did a full format of C: and reinstalled it with XP. The first thing I did was run a scan with both MBAM and SAS. Looks like I got away with it. There was no way I would put the files on my external and chance infecting that. The trouble with some of those boot sector viruses, the bloody things can jump in an instant. Sometimes you have to take chances and that time my luck held out.

Been away for awhile and one of the reasons is computers breaking through a failed boot up. I've lost two computers, one was a laptop. One day I tried to boot up and got the 'Last good configuration screen. Totally shocked because it cost me over a thousand quid about four years ago and it had been little used. During the boot up a blue-screen flashed; Unmountable boot volume problem. So that has gone into storage to be resurected when a cure is available. The other was a computer that I've had for a few years and I relied on it very much. That finally went down and a frustrating problem was I could only connect to the net for short periods when it was alive, but it served me well. The downside is, it took load of apps and personal stuff; Letters, photos and other stuff that I would have liked to have saved. Maybe I've still got a chance if I can slave it to another IDE HDD. But as the wise one's say, save it before you lose it. I saw this on a photo site and thought it might be of use: www.centered.com/
