It doesn't look like the weather was up to much Kev, but its not as sharp as it should be. I like the way you caught it all and I bet it would have looked lovely if the sun had been shining. Its not out of focus, theres just not enough light in it. I even cleaned my glasses and it still looked the same to me.

Yep, sharpness is one concern... anything else? bland colour, no warmth, tree growing out of the statues head, a light pole with branches. Not a very good photo by my standards, the camera settings were just all wrong for the shot.
Remember this shot... It was taken just before it.

It's a nice photo kev, but I always think some sunshine makes all the difference, jorg

I thought the tree behind the statue would have looked OK, if the light had been better Kev and the stature had stood out brighter. The lamp post I thought they were CCTV cameras, but with French cast ironwork, they might have been part of the design. I never know what to expect from the French in that early 20th century period. Its only 2 clicks to get rid of them anyway.
A bit of sunshine would have turned that second picture from good to great. It just wasn't a very good day for it.

Need a critique on this one, its an attempt to make it a bit more summer like and get a bit of colour into it.

That first photo was posted just to see how much wrong detail would be picked up. I was expecting it to be ripped apart as it was definately not one of my better shots.
It's definately no better Ken. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, no matter what you attempt to do with it. It still looks bland, colourless, and lifeless.
Yes Jorg, sunlight really helps, especially where gardens are involved. These shots were my first attemps with the new D7000, and I took a special trip, (by myself because Vickie didn't want to come with me), up to Toowoomba, just to try the camera out.
Those photo's were taken in Toowoomba during the Carnival of Flowers not in France Ken... lol. It was a sunny day with patches of heavy cloud. The clouds were covering the sky when those couple of shots were taken unfortunately. This one was taken a little later.... You can see the clouds that I was speaking about. It's also not one of my better shots. Too much shadow in the garden bed in the foreground. Composition of a photo either makes it good or mediocre. This one and the first one were mediocre... The second one needs the maestro Ray's touch to warm it up. I still haven't gotten my head around that bit Ray... Doh!

I was tidying up the gardens in France Kev, when you posted the last one.

Hahahaha.... The Toowooma French gardens...sounds good...lol
I just HAVE to start learning some more about photoshop. The tweaks that can be done can make a shot look so much better. Once I get my head around it a bit more, i'll start applying it to some of my shots, and do up a few slide shows.
Now! I've finished my coffee, and it's time to get back into it again for another day of work. This is the only time I take time out for a break. First up in the morning.
I have to go and pick up a computer for repair from Withcott, a half hour drive from here at the foot of the Toowoomba range. Vickie is STILL waiting for me to paint the architraves around the doors etc, on the new reno. I was supposed to do that Monday. I'm still trying to find time to do it, and run my business.

I have found that once you start brightening them, you lose the natural look Kev. There is a way of doing it, but I've not got it right yet. I can more or less do it with indoor pictures, but outdoors is a lot more difficult. You can't play with natural light, like you can with artificial. I sorta know what to do, but I just can't get the tweak right.
I was quite pleased the way the last one of the Toowoomba French gardens came out. I couldn't get the line of sight like I would have liked, but its not real anyway.

When I was at Ray and Carol's place, Ray showed Vickie and I how to warm up a photo. I've since forgotten, but I think Vickie remembers, as she wrote all the instructions down.
It's just a matter of getting her and I in the same place at the same time, so she can show me how it's done. When both of you lead totally different lives, that becomes a bit of a hassle. I have skype installed now, but finding a time when Ray and I are both online together is something else again.

I tried taking the shadows out Kev, thats easy to do. Without the shadows it looks worse, it loses something and doesn't look real. Its a pity the shadows fall the wrong way.
