Honest opinions please. We can't learn if you don't tell it like it is. This is a part of a building in France showing detail in the architecture..... G'wan, sock it to me ...

Its a hard one Kev. I might try brightening it a tad, but its an honest photo of an old patched up building. Too much change it might lose its charm, if its got any. I should think that old Ludo Mag in his fine army uniform, would feel quite proud knowing the French think the sun shines out his arse. Personally I had never heard of him until now.

It's actually been dumbed down by Vickie with a mask using Photoshop Elements 9 to make it fit into the "old fashioned" style of photo. This is the sort of thing I want to know about. It has to be pleasing to the eye for it to be a great photo. Ray's input will mean a lot to both of us, that's not to say that your's isn't a help Ken. We both want to know everyones opinion in the pursuit of excellence.

Of course I don't know what it looked like before Kev, but I think Vickie has done what I was trying to say. To my eyes it looks about right. The arch is the feature and whats behind it is irrelevant. You dont want it looking brand new.

I'm a bit of a deviant from the normal pic Ken. I'd much prefer to photograph something different like this shot, rather than take a scenery shot. Most of the piccies I took in the UK were scenery shots, and that sort of photo is not me. I'm not used to taking those sort of pics, and i'm not real good at it. I'd like to be, but my penchant is the abstract photo, or macro shot. Creative photography is what I would like to master.

A lot of people don't consider photography and art Kev, but it is. You can make a silk purse out of a sows ear, if you do it right.
I make photos for a hobby and with the right subject matter and enough care, only an expert would know its not real. A good photographer can do it all with the camera and it is real. In the right hands a camera can lie without any alteration. That is as much an art as anyone can do with a paint brush.
Presentations are another art and Ray is a past master at that. Its not what goes into the presentation, its what comes out of it.

I would love all the piccie taking members of this group, and the other members to critique this shot. I really want feedback on the subject matter, so I know if it pleases the eye, or fails in that effort. Only an honest appraisal can help me in my pursuit of excellence in photography! I really want your input guys! Please!

To be honest Kev there is not too much to be critical about, definition is good as is the detail, some of the shadows need lifting to bring out the detail in the riders face which I have done in the pic below. I have also adjusted a slight camera distortion but this is very subjective as we all see things differently but to my eye it needed just a small tweak. Apart from that there is not much more to say except that it's an excellent reproduction of the arch, well done mate. Ray

Thanks for that Ray. I didn't know how to adjust that shadow without ruining the rest of the shot. I'll get Vickie to look at your tweak of the picture and see if she can re-create it for me.
Vickie put a 'gypsy mask' over the shot to make it look "old fashioned", to use her words. Maybe that is why the shadows were there.

I even had a go using PSP Photo, but couldn't improve on it. I suppose its good to see PSP compared to Paint shop, is the difference worth the money?? Then peoples opinions are as different as their eye for seeing things. I think Van Gogh is crap and people pay a kings ransom for his stuff.

Thanks Ray Ken and Ann. I think tweaking it at all takes away from the detail in the art work around the arch. If ligtening the riders face only, was done, it may look ok, but no more than that.
