I went with the 4870 for AMD, but wouldn't you be better off with nVidia 8000 series for Intel Kev?? Also living in the tropics, the 4870 dont half take a lot of cooling. Even with the dual fans, mine will run at 47º C without a slot fan on the top side. I know the 8000 series burn a lot of juice, but I dont know how well the cooling works. They cant be any worse than the Radeon.

If I was going nVidia KC, i'd be going for the newer GTX260 series. They've been kicking ATI's 4870 in the butt for a while now. It's only the 4870x2 that is better.

Mine is the 4870 x 2 and cooling it, is the only problem with it. Its very juicy as well, but so is the GTX260 and GTX280.
On Toms Corner, they reckon the GTX260 is the best buy of the nVidia range and the GTX280 is a failure. The 4870 x 2 was rated the best of the lot and it only lost points on juice and heat, not on performance.
I thought the GTX260/280 were the same engine as the 8000 range x 2. Maybe I got it wrong.
ATI GPUs are now DDR5. I wonder if thats a sign of AMD giving DDR3 a miss and going straight from DDR2 to DDR5, in the near future. Every time a new processor comes out, the memory changes. Its got so you cant reuse your memory on a new build any more.

You must have had an unexpected widfall just before you built your new puter KC !!!! .... I couldn't justify the cost of the 4870 x2... The cheapest one I can get is AU$742.00. That's almost as much as my motherboard and processor combined. The GTX260 is AU$450.00, and that's a bit of a stretch for me at the moment.

I made a mistake Kev; my Palit has got dual BIOS and the turbo boost, but not the 2 processors. The Sonic Dual is the one before the Revolution came out. I paid £195.00 UK for mine and the 512 Mb Revolution is about £255.00 UK. I think the other card he had in the shop was a 2Gb Revolution and I think it was £1005.00 UK. I wanted a good card, but not one that was more expensive than the computer. Its a great card, now I have managed to cool it. Theres a sucker behind them 2 blowers. Now it stays between 31/33º C and the CPU between 36/38º C. KC

I see you have a Zalman heatsink/fan assembly for your processor now too KC.. ?? That was what i had in SOQ for my Athlon x64 4200+. It didn't cool as good as i thought it would. I had a drop of 2ºC from what i had with the boxed AMD heatsink/fan assembly. It sure didn't justify spending the money for the Zalman..
I was wondering about that Ken, when you said you have the dual processor model....hehehehe "Panosonic" is currently sitting on 44ºC for the processor in this heat, and 36ºC for the motherboard or southbridge chipset. No need for special fans or anything yet.

Theres 14 Elvis, 5 cooling the graphics card. It's got 2 built in, 2 blowing on the top and one sucking out on the top. It stays at a pretty steady 33º C now. There are 4 case fans and the 3 small ones on the Memory. The Zalman has got a big 110mm x 110mm x 25mm and the PSU has one 13.8 cm. The city lights dim when I fire her up. Its got a 850 watt PSU.
That Zalman Ultra Rose does a much better job than the AMD block Kev. Since I got the heat from the graphics under control, I've yet to see it get to 39º C, it been steady on 36º C for the last hour or so. I've got central heating on, coz of the snow outside. It was running about 43/45º C with the AMD heat sink. Its not just got the fan blowing from the bottom, its got the PSU sucking at the top. Thats why I went for it, it seemed to be the best design for the rig.
I would have thought twice about that Palit, if I knew how hot it can get. Its a good job I have got the 4 PCI-E2 slots, otherwise it would be sitting right under the CPU. I think thats why they put 4 slots on the mobo, you wouldn't put 4 of these cards in. Well not unless you were going to use it as a stove.

It probably doesn't need the fans on the memory. As Corsair supply the units along with their Airflow RAM, I stuck it on. With an 850 watt PSU, I'm not short of power. The graphics card is the juiciest part of the whole thing and the heat it knocks out, my stove is probably cheaper to run. It uses 2 x 6 pin 75 watt connectors. The x 2 uses 4 of the buggers.

I've decided that a GE Force 9800GT with 512mb of onboard ram is going to be good enough for "Panorama" as I don't play any graphic intensive games, and the price is right at the moment. The ASUS 8600GT currently in Pano is going into Vickies "ex-SOQ" as the other video card I tried yesterday (GE Force 7100SE) is also faulty. I'm going to check how long ago I purchased the Leadtek 8600GT, I have a funny feeling it's still in warranty.
Ps... I just found the invoice for the graphics card and yep, you guessed it, I purchased it on the 16/01/2008 so it's just out of bloody warranty... Bugga !!!!

The nVidia 9800GT is behaving nicely. It kicked my 3D Mark scores up quite considerably, although it's not in the Radeon 4870 or nVidia GTX260 class. It's adequate for my needs without the huge expense, coming in at under $200.00.

I have got a gaming case coming on Monday, with a big turbine on the front. I'm hoping it will cool The Beast down without quite so many fans running. Its not the smartest looking case in the book, but I think the fan arrangement is the best for what I need.
